Our Tonewood

Tonewood procurement is conducted through auctions held at Indian government depots, ensuring that only the highest quality logs are selected. These tonewoods are legally obtained and graded to meet stringent standards, focusing on top-tier tonewood. The procurement process adheres to the guidelines set by CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), a regulatory board that authorizes legal international trade from Kerala for specific species like Rosewood. This ensures that all procured wood complies with environmental and legal standards, promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.

Among the species procured, Rosewood stands out as it requires specific CITES approval for trade, reflecting the emphasis on adherence to international regulations for endangered species. The focus of the tonewood business in Kerala is on quality over quantity. By prioritizing top-quality products and adhering to strict regulatory and environmental standards, the procurement process ensures the sustainable and legal trade of valuable wood species. This approach not only supports ecological balance but also maintains the integrity and reputation of the tonewood industry in India.

Our grading

Guitar back and sides grading (A, AB, and C grades) is a system used to evaluate the aesthetic and structural quality of the wood used for constructing the back and sides of acoustic guitars. These grades help luthiers and buyers assess the suitability and visual appeal of the materials. Here’s a breakdown of the typical criteria for each grade:

A Grade
• Appearance: High-quality wood with minimal visual imperfections. The grain is well-matched, straight, or features an aesthetically pleasing figure (e.g., flame, quilt, or other patterns).
• Colour and Consistency: Uniform colour without significant discoloration or streaking.
• Defects: Virtually no knots, cracks, or other structural issues.
• Use Case: Premium guitars and high-end builds where visual appeal and consistency are critical.

AB Grade
• Appearance: Wood with slight inconsistencies in grain or figure. The match between the two halves of the back may be less perfect compared to A-grade.
• Colour and Consistency: May have minor colour variations or slight streaking.
• Defects: May include small knots or other minor flaws that do not compromise structural integrity.
• Use Case: Mid-range guitars where a balance of quality and cost is desired.

C Grade
• Appearance: Wood with noticeable imperfections in grain, figure, or symmetry. The grain may be mismatched, or the wood may have less visually appealing patterns.
• Colour and Consistency: Significant colour variation, streaking, or uneven tones.
• Defects: May have visible knots, checks, or other cosmetic imperfections, though the wood remains structurally sound for use.
• Use Case: Entry-level guitars or budget builds where functionality is prioritized over appearance.

Key Points
• Structural Integrity: All grades are structurally sound, meaning they are still suitable for guitar building. The grading focuses more on aesthetics.
• Subjectivity: Grading can be somewhat subjective, varying between suppliers and luthiers. Some wood with unique patterns or character may still be highly desirable despite lower grades.
• Cost: Higher grades are more expensive due to their rarity and visual quality.

The choice of grade depends on the builder’s priorities, whether it’s visual beauty, cost-effectiveness, or tonal characteristics.
